29/01/2005 - SHOREHAM HOLD ON FOR THREE VITAL POINTS

MARTIN O'DONNELL and MATT HURLEY gave the Musselmen three vital points today, to cement that vital 3rd position in the league, we are now 5 points clear. Shoreham started the game in the usual fashion, dominating possession and creating chances, it took only 6 minutes to open our account when Matt Hurley pounced on the ball in the six yard box after a goal mouth scramble. 1-0 and cruising.

Then on 13 mins Shaheen Sadough made a mazy run into the opposition penalty box, and was fouled. Robbie Craven stepped up to take the penalty, Guess what happens next????? You probably guessed right, He missed the penalty. I think we have now missed 7 (seven) penalties this season.

Then 2 minutes after Wayne Joseph made a great run down the right flank, and with only Martin O'Donnell in the box, Wayne found the head of Martin who scored a magnificant looping header. 2-0 after 15 minutes.

Oakwood replied after 40 mins, Zak Newman the goalscorer. In the second half Oakwood started the better team and had chances to level the match, But we held to secure the three vital points!!!

Description of ground: Oakwood FC moved to their current premises in Tinsley Lane, off the enornous Manor Royal Industrial Park in 1983. Be warned: Manor Royal is a bit of a rabbit warren and it is easy to get lost, so follow the directions carefully!

The ground is situated right at the far end, past the former ground of TSC FC (previously Thompson Athletic), with whom Oakwood amalgamated at the end of the 2001/02 season. Horley Town FC briefly played at the ground whilst their new HQ - The “New Defence” - was being developed, but the site is now vacant.

The ground boasts a clubhouse (built in 1990) along the near touchline, with tables and chairs provided outside, and an overhang to the roof for specators to shelter under when the weather is wet. This provides the only cover at the ground. The pitch has undergone numerous drainage works in the past. In the mid 1990s there were plans for the club to relocate and these are evidently still under review. In the meantime however, the Club is looking to upgrade the existing facilities to meet grading requirements.

Brief history: Oakwood Football Club was founded in 1962 by a group of teenagers and was known as St. Wilfred Youth Wing. In 1966 the club changed it’s name to Oakwood, after the estate where the school was situated in Crawley. The club played on Crawley Council pitches until taking over Tinsley Lane (then a disused sports ground), whilst competing in the Southern Counties Combination in 1983.

Oakwood joined Division Three of the County League in 1984/85, and immediately won promotion after finishing as champions, six points clear of runners-up Bosham. The next five seasons were spent in Division Two, before the club once again won promotion, this time to Division One at the end of the 1989/90 season, after finishing as runners-up to Bexhill Town (now Bexhill United). In 1993 the club reached the Final of the Sussex Senior Cup, before losing to Wick.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in 1995/96, Oakwood were not as fortunate the following season, and have remained in Division Two ever since. 2002/03 saw them finish 4th, their best placing since relegation, albeit some way behind the promoted clubs.

Steyning Town FC - brief history
Formed in 1892, Steyning spent all their earlier years in the lower intermediate and junior divisions of the Worthing and Brighton leagues. They had limited success winning the Sussex Junior Cup in 1902 and the Vernon Wentworth Cup in 1934.

The club gained senior status in 1964 joining the Sussex County League, playing in Division Two up until 1978 when they were promoted to Division One as Champions. Their only success during this time was winning the Division Two Invitation Trophy in 1966.

During the 1980s Steyning were one of the top Non League clubs in Sussex and spent eight years in Division One, only once finishing outside the top four. In 1984/85 and 1985/86 they were crowned County League Champions, doing the “double” of League and League Cup on both occasions. In 1986 they also won the Sussex Senior Cup and reached the last eight of the FA Vase.

Having won the County League for the second successive time Steyning left to join the newly formed Wessex League. However, the endless travelling was to prove too costly and after only two seasons the club joined the Combined Counties League in 1988.

Steyning spent five years in this league, during what proved a difficult time for the club, although they did repeat their Senior Cup success in 1989 beating Hastings Town in the Final at the Goldstone Ground. They returned to the Sussex County League in 1993 joining Division Two but were relegated in 1997 to Division Three and back to Intermediate football.

At the end of 2001/02, Steyning won promotion back to Division Two as runners-up to Pease Pottage Village, and also won the Vernon Wentworth Cup after a gap of 68 years. After a bleak decade there are hopes that one day the club will able to recapture their glory days of twenty years ago.

20/01/2005 - Mussels snap up Hawks Midfielder

Shoreham Football Club are glad to announce the signing of Whitehawk Midfielder BEN GARMAN. Ben will hopefully be in the squad to face his old team Steyning on Saturday. We wish Ben every success at the club.

Profile: Midfielder - Ben started his career with Steyning Town in the 2001/02 season where he scored 6 league during their Division Three promotion season. He then moved to Whitehawk in the summer of 2004, where he has been an integural part of the team.
